Demand for fast implementation of alternatives to killing male chicks
Following the court ruling of 13 June 2019 that the shredding of male chicks is still permitted on a transitional basis, EQAsce calls for a stronger commitment to the implementation of alternatives. As our forum discussion at the International Green Week in Berlin in January 2019 has shown, well-developed alternative concepts and methods already exist. One of the ideas has been introduced by Evonik who presented the start-up “in-ovo sexing” that already determines the gender of the chicks in the egg with high precision. Another technological alternatives is shown in this video.
According to EQAsce, a fast implementation of standardized technologies in Europe needs cross-border-cooperation between science and industry. The Public Private Partnership Initiative ‘Animal Welfare’ has set up the goal to push the developments that are necessary for an improvement of animal welfare. This is a faster process compared to the activities of the single countries.
